Solve any percentage question

Percentages appear everywhere — exam marks, salary increments, discounts, profit and loss. This calculator handles the three most common questions so you do not have to remember formulas:

  • What is X% of Y? – for example, 15% of 2,000 = 300.
  • X is what percent of Y? – for example, 450 out of 500 marks = 90%.
  • Percentage increase or decrease – for example, a salary going from 50,000 to 60,000 is a 20% increase.

Everyday uses

Students use it to convert marks into percentages for admission forms, employees to check pay raises, shopkeepers to set profit margins and investors to see how much a price has gone up or down.

A common trap

A 50% drop followed by a 50% rise does not bring you back to the start. 100 falls to 50, and 50% of 50 is only 25, so you end at 75. Percentage changes always apply to the current number, not the original one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease?
Use the "percentage change" option: enter the original and new value, and it calculates the percentage difference between them, correctly handling both increases and decreases.
Why do "20% of 50" and "50% of 20" give the same answer?
Percentage calculations are commutative in this specific sense — mathematically, X% of Y always equals Y% of X, since both are just (X × Y) / 100.
