What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number calculated from your weight and height: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It is used worldwide as a simple first check of whether a person's weight is in a healthy range for their height.

Standard adult BMI ranges (WHO)

  • Below 18.5 – underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 – normal weight
  • 25 – 29.9 – overweight
  • 30 and above – obese

Some health bodies use slightly lower cut-offs for South Asian adults, because health risks can start at a lower BMI.

Limitations to keep in mind

BMI does not measure body fat directly. Muscular people can show a high BMI while being very fit, and it is not designed for children, pregnant women or older adults in the same way. Treat the result as a starting point, and speak to a doctor for a proper health assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI an accurate measure of health for everyone?
No — BMI is a simple screening tool based only on height and weight. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat and can be misleading for athletes, older adults, or certain body types. It's a starting point, not a diagnosis.
What BMI range is considered "normal"?
The commonly used WHO range for adults is roughly 18.5–24.9. Below that is classified underweight, and above it moves into overweight and obese categories — this tool shows which category your result falls into.
