🔐 Base64 Encoder / Decoder

Encode or decode Base64 text instantly.

📋 How to Use

1. Paste your text or Base64 string into the box.
2. Choose Encode (text to Base64) or Decode (Base64 back to text).
3. Copy the result — invalid Base64 input is flagged instead of producing garbage output.

✅ Features

Two-way conversion in a single interface.
UTF-8 safe, so accented characters and emoji round-trip correctly.
No data is sent anywhere — encoding happens directly in your browser.

What is Base64?

Base64 is a way of writing any data — text, images or files — using only 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It is used whenever binary data has to travel through systems that only expect plain text, such as email attachments, JSON APIs, data URLs in HTML/CSS and basic authentication headers.

What this tool does

  • Encode: turn normal text into a Base64 string.
  • Decode: turn a Base64 string back into readable text to see what it contains.

Important things to know

Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it instantly, so never use it to hide passwords or private data. Encoded output is also about 33% larger than the original, which is why large images are usually better served as normal files instead of Base64 data URLs.

If decoding fails, check for missing "=" padding at the end, extra spaces or line breaks, or a URL-safe variant that uses "-" and "_" instead of "+" and "/".

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base64 actually used for?
It's a way to represent binary or arbitrary data using only plain text characters, commonly used for embedding small images in CSS/HTML, encoding data in URLs, or passing data through systems that only handle text safely.
Is Base64 the same thing as encryption?
No — Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. It's trivially reversible by anyone (that's the point, it's not meant to be secret) and should never be used to protect sensitive information on its own.
