How Zakat is calculated

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: an annual payment of 2.5% of a Muslim's qualifying wealth, given to people in need. It becomes due when your net wealth is equal to or above the Nisab and you have held it for one lunar (Hijri) year.

What is included

  • Gold and silver (jewellery included, according to the Hanafi view common in Pakistan).
  • Cash at home and money in bank accounts.
  • Shares, mutual funds and other investments.
  • Business stock and goods meant for sale.
  • Loans you have given and expect to get back.

Your home, personal car, household items and tools you use for work are generally not included.

The formula

Net wealth = total zakatable assets − debts due now. If net wealth ≥ Nisab, Zakat = net wealth × 2.5%. For example, net wealth of 1,000,000 rupees means Zakat of 25,000 rupees.

Important notes

Gold and silver prices change every day, so use the current rate in your local market on the day you calculate. Many people calculate Zakat in Ramadan for convenience. This calculator gives a general estimate; for special cases such as business partnerships, pensions or agricultural produce, please consult a qualified scholar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have, for one lunar year, before Zakat becomes due. It equals 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver.
Should I use the gold or silver Nisab?
Many scholars recommend the silver Nisab because it is lower, so more people give Zakat and the poor benefit more. Some people with only gold use the gold Nisab. Ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.
