How your electricity bill is calculated

Your bill is mainly units used × the per-unit rate of your slab, plus surcharges, fuel price adjustment (FPA), electricity duty, GST and a small TV fee. This calculator puts them together so you can estimate the bill before it arrives and see how much you save by using fewer units.

Protected vs non-protected

  • Protected: 200 units or less in each of the last 6 months. The first 100 units and the next 100 units are charged at separate low rates.
  • Non-protected: everyone else. All units are charged at the rate of the slab your monthly total falls in.

Tips to lower your bill

  • Watch the slab limits — staying at 200 units instead of 201, or 300 instead of 301, can save a lot.
  • Check your meter reading in the middle of the month to plan usage.
  • Use inverter ACs at 26 °C, LED lights and switch off geysers and pumps when not needed.
  • Compare your units with the same month last year shown on your bill.

About the rates

Rates are set by NEPRA and the federal government and are revised from time to time; FPA changes every month. Rates can also differ slightly between LESCO, IESCO, MEPCO, FESCO, GEPCO, PESCO, HESCO, QESCO, SEPCO, TESCO and K-Electric. Open "Rates used" in the calculator and enter the figures from your latest bill for the closest estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a protected consumer?
A household that used 200 units or less in each of the last 6 months. Protected consumers get lower rates and the slab-by-slab benefit. Using more than 200 units in any month makes you non-protected.
Why did my bill jump when I used only a few more units?
For non-protected consumers, all units are charged at the rate of the slab your total falls in. Crossing from 200 to 201 units, for example, moves every unit to a higher rate.
