How GPA and CGPA are calculated

Each course gives grade points (for example A = 4.0, B = 3.0) multiplied by its credit hours. Your GPA is the total of these "quality points" divided by the total credit hours for the semester. CGPA uses the same idea across every semester you have completed.

Example

If you get an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in another 3-credit course, your quality points are 12 + 9 = 21. Divide by 6 credit hours and your GPA is 3.50.

Common 4.0 grade scale

  • A = 4.00, A- = 3.67
  • B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67
  • C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67
  • D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, F = 0.00

Tips for improving your CGPA

  • High-credit courses affect your CGPA the most, so give them extra attention.
  • Improving early is easier — the more credit hours you complete, the slower your CGPA moves.
  • Check whether your university allows repeating a course to replace a low grade.

Many scholarships and jobs ask for a minimum CGPA (often 2.5 or 3.0), so keep track every semester.
